Bertram and his three friends have formed a small gang of thieves called The Ravens. He lives alone with his mom, who works as a waitress. He doesn´t remember his father much, as the latter was arrested for murder and sentenced to life imprisonment when Bertram was only seven years old. One day, Bertram steals an expensive 'Schott Made in USA' leather jacket from a restaurant, which will have fatal consequences, and not just for Bertram. Rolando Benito, an investigator at the Police Complaints Authority, and his colleague are sent out to question two police officers. A prison guard has jumped out of his window on the fourth floor, just as the two officers were pulling up, after a noise complaint had been made for loud music coming out of his apartment. As the prison guard is the father of Rolando grandchild's school friend, he hears a rumour that a prisoner has died in the prison the man worked in, and that the prison guard had felt threated and persecuted.
Is it in fact not a suicide case at all? Anne Larsen, a journalist for TV2 East Jutland, is also on the case. Everyone seems to be connected to one prisoner, the murderer Patrick Asp, who killed his own infant baby and is a prisoner in the jail the prison guard worked at. As more mysterious deaths pile up, and a Supreme Court judge disappears without a trace, Rolando Benito and Anne Larsen team up in search of a connection. That link turns out to be Bertram and the theft of the jacket, and now Anne's head in on the line as well.

Bertram is afraid to go to the police and tell them what he found in the stolen jacket, as he is a wanted criminal and does not want anything to do with law enforcement. He tries calling anonymously one evening, while drunk and after smoking a couple of joints, but the police refuse to believe him. When Bertram later discovers that his mum is in danger for her life, he tries to warn her, but she does not believe him either. He begins following her, and finds out that she is meeting with a man he does not recognise.
When Bertram asks her who he is, she finally admits that he is her boyfriend, and that they are planning on moving away from the neighbourhood and starting a new life together. Bertram decides to find out where he lives, and breaks in to find out what he can about him. As he goes through the man’s belongings, he finds a collection of fake passports, and a photograph of the man wearing the stolen leather jacket.

Anne Larsen finds out that the dead defense attorney ended her career shortly after losing a case, and that her client, child murderer Patrick Asp, was sent to prison. The father of the defense attorney, himself a supreme court justice, has vanished without a trace. Anne is at the prison to interview the warden about the prisoner who died of a drug overdose, when Patrick Asp discreetly manages to slip her a letter. He writes that he has been wrongly imprisoned, and that his wife played a part in this. Anne seeks out the woman in the restaurant where she works. She also meets her son, Bertram, and Anne gets the feeling that they are both hiding something. There is something suspicious about Uwe Finch as well, the man the mum is seeing. He acts as if he is trying to conceal his real identity, and Anne contacts Roland Benito to seek his help in determining who the man might be.

Anne Larsen shows Roland a picture of Uwe Finch, and Roland recognises some of his features. Something about the eyes being so close together. But surely it cannot be the man it resembles, as he died years ago in a hotel fire. When a fingerprint determines that it is indeed the man he feared it might be, Roland becomes interested in finding out why he has returned with a new identity, and why he might be in Aarhus. Bertram’s mum has found the stolen leather jacket in his room, and wants to return it to her boyfriend. Once again, Bertram attempts to get through to her and make her understand that her life is in danger, but she is angry and refuses to listen to him. She claims that he is being jealous, and accuses him of being the one who really murdered his infant sister. Bertram is furious, smokes a joint, and falls asleep with the TV still on. In his intoxicated state, he suddenly realises the horrible truth. When the night is over, and Bertram awakens from his daze, he finds out that his mum has not come home.

The new information in the case makes Roland Benito re-examine the prison guard’s suicide. Now he knows for certain who Uwe Finch really is, and he decides to let Anne Larsen know. She was the one who obtained Uwe Finch’s fingerprint, and in the past, Roland has found out that Anne can be of great help in police investigations. Bertram is shocked to find out what has happened to his mum, but suddenly Anne Larsen, the reporter from TV2 East Jutland, shows up. Bertram breaks down in front of Anne, telling her everything, and Anne tells him that they need to get away immediately. But it is too late. When Roland hears about a new death on his car radio, he fears that Anne Larsen might be in danger as well, and tries calling her, but gets no reply. When he receives a phone call, he hopes that it is her, but it turns out to be Leif Skovby, one of the officers in the suicide case. Leif wants to meet with Roland, and what he tells him makes everything clear. Roland gets the officer to help him trace Anne’s phone, but will Roland find her before it is too late?
