Wannsee: The Road to the Final Solution

The complete story of the Wannsee Conference, the meeting that paved the way for the Holocaust On January 20, 1942, fifteen men arrived for a meeting in a luxurious villa on the shores of the Wannsee in the far-western outskirts of Berlin. They came at the invitation of Reinhard Heydrich and were almost all high-ranking Nazi Party, government, and SS officials. The exquisite position by the lake, the imposing driveway up to the villa, culminating in a generously sized roundabout in front of the house, the expansive, carefully landscaped park, the generous suite of rooms that opened on to the park and the lake, the three-level terrace that stretched the entire garden side of the house, and the winter garden with its marble fountain, all give today’s visitor to the villa a good idea of its owner’s aspiration to build a sophisticated, almost palatial structure as a testament to his cultivation and worldly success. But the beauty of the situation stood in stark contrast to the purpose of the meeting to which the fifteen had come in January 1942: the “Final Solution of the Jewish Question.” According to the surviving records of the meeting, items on the agenda included the precise definition of exactly which group of people were to be affected, followed by a discussion of how upwards of eleven million people were to be deported and subjected to the toughest form of forced labor and, following on from this a discussion, of how the survivors of this forced labor as well as those not capable of it were ultimately to be killed. Churchill, Eisenhower, and the Making of the Modern World

It is often said that the special bond between Britain and the United States was forged in war between President Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. But the closer link in many ways was that between Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower, since it existed both in wartime from 1941 to 1945 but also again in very different circumstances. Between 1951 and 1955, Churchill was prime minister and Eisenhower was briefly the first supreme allied commander of NATO, before going back to the United States to win the 1952 presidential race. This overlapped in the White House with Churchill’s peacetime premiership from 1953 to 1955. And from 1945 to 1951, Churchill by his speeches and Eisenhower by his tenure as first-ever supreme allied commander Europe were continuing to create the new and stable global world order that held until now. In other words, theirs was a much longer relationship than that between President Roosevelt and Churchill and spanning peace as well as war. And it was the Eisenhower and Churchill relationship that essentially created the world order that lasted down until current times. Churchill and Eisenhower can also be seen as a passing of the baton, from Britain as the fading superpower to the dynamic new world of the United States. Churchill’s relationship with Eisenhower spans this transition perfectly and is the ideal prism through which to witness this change, in terms of how the balance between the United Kingdom and the United States altered both as countries and in personal terms between the two men themselves.
