The Blue Fairy Book

The poet, novelist and literary critic Andrew Lang (1844–1912) wrote, edited, collected, or contributed to more than 150 works, of which the most notable are his Fairy Books, a series of 25 collections of stories for children published between 1889 and 1913. Lang created the enchanting world of fairyland inhabited by the snow-queen, the mermaid's son, giants, ogres, dwarfs, monsters and magicians. ‘The Blue Fairy Book’ (1889) is the first volume in the series and contains some of the most familiar tales from sources like The Arabian Nights, Grimm, Charles Perrault, Madame D'Aulnoy, Norwegian folklore and more. Tales featured in ‘The Blue Fairy book’ include Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Blue Beard, The Bronze Ring, Cinderella, East of the Sun, West of the Moon, The Forty Thieves, Hansel and Gretel, Puss in Boots, Trusty John, Jack and the Giantkiller, Goldilocks, Sleeping Beauty and Rumpelstiltskin. Lang's versions of fairy tales are generally considered to be the best English versions, and his collections are the richest and widest in range.

The Verge

Susan Keating Glaspell (1876 -1948) was a novelist, playwright, journalist and actress. 'The Verge' reflects Glaspell's observation of the way in which Victorian society left some women feeling trapped in roles for which they were unsuited. The narrative is about Claire, a woman who lives her life on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Trying to create a new type of plant, Claire spends most of her time in the greenhouse. One winter, with a house full of guests, she diverts the heat to the greenhouse. She tries to leave her family and friends outside, in the cold, and their attempts to bring her back to the real world drive her over the edge into utter insanity. The language of 'The Verge' is unusual; the characters sometimes speak in poetic fragments rather than everyday speech. What's more, symbolism features heavily in the play. Of course it all ends in death and destruction, with Claire humming 'Nearer My God, to Thee" with a smoking gun in her hand and a dead man at her feet.

The Age of Innocence

'The Age of Innocence' is a 1920 novel by Edith Wharton, and the winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize. The title is an ironic comment on the smooth outward manners of New York society in comparison to its inner workings. The narrative revolves around the impending marriage of an upper-class couple, Newland Archer and the beautiful May Welland, which is disrupted by the appearance of the mysterious Countess Ellen Olenska who shocks the New York aristocracy with her unconventional manners and revealing clothes. The novel's underlying theme is the loss of the pre-war world which was destroyed by World War I. The writing is rich in detail, and impressive in its descriptions of the golden age of New York in the 19th century.

The Minister's Black Veil

'The Minister's Black Veil' by Nathaniel Hawthorne, first published in 1832, is a grim tale about Mr Hooper, a preacher, who starts wearing a veil over the upper part of his face. He first wore the veil while delivering a sermon on secret sin, and never removes it, despite the dismay of the congregation or the pleas of his fiancée, who leaves him. Mr Hooper develops into Father Hooper, a figure who makes converts of people who imagine themselves to also hide behind the veil. Through the narrative technique, Hawthorne ultimately implies that the exposed faces of people also function like veils in order to cover one or more of the deadly sins.
