The untold story of the D-Day scientists who changed special operations forever. On the beaches of Normandy, two summers before D-Day, the Allies attempted an all but forgotten landing. Of the nearly seven thousand Allied troops sent ashore, only a few hundred survived the terrible massacre, and the reason for the debacle was a lack of reconnaissance. The shore turned out to be impassable to tanks. The Nazis had hidden obstacles in unexpected places. The fortifications were more numerous – and deadly – than imagined. The Allies knew they needed to take the fight to Hitler on the European mainland to end the war, but they could not afford to be unprepared again. A small group of eccentric researchers, experimenting on themselves from inside pressure tanks in the middle of the London air raids, explored the deadly science needed to enable the critical reconnaissance vessels and underwater breathing apparatuses that would enable the Allies' dramatic, history-making success during the next major beach landing: D-Day.

Commando Medics in the Falkland War
This is a unique account of the Falkland War, told by former Commando Medic, Malcolm Hazell, who led a team of 39 men, initially at Ajax Bay, and subsequently at Teal Inlet where they were alongside members of the Special Boat Service (SBS) and the Commandos specialist Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre (M&AW Cadre). Detailed accounts are given of the facilities the medical team provided at both locations, and the largely untold military role Teal Inlet played in defeating the Argentine Forces. Above all this is a graphic account of the war, and its many battles, including Naval gunfire support provided by destroyers and frigates, and the damage and losses resulting both ashore and afloat. Having written the account, shocking anomalies regarding fatalities from both sides of the conflict are uncovered and remain unresolved. Malcolm Hazell's medical team played a full part in the reception and treatment of around two-thirds of all the casualties treated ashore, ably supported at Ajax Bay by both Royal Navy and Parachute surgical teams; but at Teal Inlet they depended on just one surgeon and a handful of other medics to manage an operating table. When weather conditions deteriorated as the war reached its climax, the team at Teal Inlet were the sole receiving medical facility, placing an unimaginable strain on the facility, much of which was under canvas. Argentine and British fatalities were also being flown back to the facility - something that has proven highly controversial and contentious as the author has sought to clarify anomalies he identified in 2020, only to be met with denials and silence. This is not just a medics story however, and the reader is given a full understanding of the tactical situation throughout the account, on a day-by-day, blow-by-blow basis. 'Commando Medics in the Falkland War' provides a complete insight into almost every aspect of this brutal war.

A Body in the Lane: The Rejoiner Book 3
Serious international crime operations thrive in big cities. They don't occur in tinpot little towns like Llangwelli. Or do they? It's late evening when the Regional Control Centre receives a mysterious 999 call. No-one speaks, but the call location is somewhere along a narrow, hardly used tree-lined stretch of road that leads nowhere. With no uniformed officers free to investigate, they pass the call on to DC Judy Lane at Llangwelli station. Lane informs DS Norman Norman who, concerned it may be a trap, agrees to meet her at the scene. But when Norman arrives, he finds a dead motorcyclist sitting against a tree, and the young detective unconscious nearby. It looks as if he was right to think it could be a trap, but if the biker died when he fell off his bike and hit the tree, who attacked Judy Lane? And who made the 999 call? Next morning an accident investigator suggests this was no accident, and the motorcyclist was a victim of a hit and run. Then, to complicate matters further, they find a young woman's body near the scene of the accident. But who is the young woman, and what's her connection to the motorcyclist? Before long, Llangwelli's finest are drawn into a tangled web of deception and corruption, but someone seems to know their every move and is trying to silence anyone who might know the truth. Norman and boss DI Sarah Southall came to Llangwelli on the understanding crime was very much small time, but now it seems they may have uncovered a serious crime operation right on their doorstep. The idea such a thing could happen in a quiet little town like Llangwelli seems unlikely. But then, perhaps that's what they're supposed to think. Maybe the idea it's so unlikely makes it more likely… A Body In The Lane is the third book in the Rejoiner series. If you prefer mysteries delivered with a lighter touch, you'll love P.F. Ford's latest offering.
