Jest a Minute: The Complete Series 1 and 2 Plus Specials: A BBC Radio Comedy Panel Game
Stand-up star Rhod Gilbert hosts the panel show about the serious business of comedy The hilarious comic lovechild of A Question of Sport and QI, Jest a Minute is a light-hearted, lively show that quizzes leading comedians on their knowledge of comedy. Host Rhod Gilbert accepts no backchat and gives short shrift to cheek as he recklessly awards points based on how quick, agile and witty he considers the panellists to be. In a series of fast-paced, chaotic rounds, they are tasked with answering quickfire questions on comedy history, sitcom titles, catchphrases and classic comedy films. There’s also a chance for some audience participation, as the teams pick a volunteer from the audience in a bid to find out who can tell the funniest joke, and a final buzzer round, in which Rhod reads out the start of a well-known gag (such as ‘What’s brown and sticky?’) and the contestants buzz in with their finest, funniest and most original punchlines. Among the A-list talent taking part in these two series are Justin Moorhouse, Chris Corcoran, Lloyd Langford, Jarred Christmas, Jeremy Hardy, Tom Allen, Alun Cochrane, Sarah Millican, Lucy Porter, Milton Jones and Jon Richardson. Also included are three special episodes, recorded at the Machynlleth Comedy Festival and Green Man Festival in 2015 and 2016, featuring Elis James, Cariad Lloyd, Ed Gamble, Greg Davies, Holly Walsh, Rob Deering, Chris Corcoran, Paul Foot and Kiri Pritchard-McLean. The Guessing Game: The Complete Series 1 and 2: A BBC Radio Comedy Quiz Show
Clive Anderson hosts the comedy panel game that fancies itself as an intelligent quiz Ostensibly a quickfire quiz, The Guessing Game is really a show that pushes facts aside in favour of flights of fancy and rewards the funniest, luckiest and most bizarre guesses. The premise is simple: host Clive Anderson fires off a series of difficult and implausible questions, and awards points to the panellists for their outlandish answers. What's the difference between Justin Bieber and a banana? Who invented the cat hole? Why would humans lose a war with chickens? These posers, and many others, are tackled by some of Britain's best and brightest celebrities, among them Rory Bremner, Phill Jupitus, Christopher Brookmyre, Jo Caulfield, Josh Widdicombe, Lucy Porter and Cariad Lloyd. Series 1 is a complete free-for-all, but in Series 2, Alex Horne and Susan Calman step in as team captains to try and impose some order on the chaos. Included here are all 12 episodes of the witty, whimsical and wildly speculative show - so sit back and enjoy six fun-filled hours of silly questions and even sillier answers. A sparkling selection of one-off comedy shows from Radio 4's Sunday night Stand Up Specials season Since 2018, BBC Radio 4 has been making the nation laugh with its Stand Up Specials strand, featuring fantastic half-hour sets from a host of celebrated comedians. This wide-ranging collection brings together eleven of the very best acts, from established stars to new and emerging talent, as they 'zoom through angst from all angles' (The Guardian). Among the hot comic takes, Tom Allen's Not Very Nice explores what happens when the hilarious host of The Apprentice: You're Fired turns from sweet to naughty; Pippa Evans Grows Up finds the Now Show star asking what it means to be a grown-up; Postcards to Portsmouth sees Suzi Ruffell returning to her home town (well, just down the road) to share tales of her family; and Kiri Pritchard-McLean spotlights the life choices of millennials in Egg-sistential Crisis, asking 'why have they stopped having babies?' From Asda to Diva introduces us to Jayde Adams, who combines wit and show-stopping music to demonstrate how she went from working in a supermarket to fully-fledged prima donna; Emergency Broadcast sees Gemma Arrowsmith trapped in Broadcasting House and presenting a lockdown sketch show with Tom Crowley, Adam Courting, Hugh Dennis and Susan Harrison; Talking Shop outlines BBC New Comedy Award winner Stephen Buchanan's chequered work history and friendship with a Vietnamese refugee; and in Centrist Dad?, Alun Cochrane defends the much-maligned middle ground as he tries to find his place on the shifting political spectrum. Also included is Black Country Gentlemon, in which George Fouracres tells his story of growing up in Wolverhampton; Magnifying Class, Athena Kugblenu's examination of class identity and what it means to be upwardly mobile; and One of Many, where Stephen Bailey contemplates his numerous namesakes - all of whom are more newsworthy than him - and wonders whether you can change your life just by changing your name. Complete Series - Comedian Alun Cochrane has a 25 year mortgage which he can only pay off by being funny. In this series he takes us on a room by room, stand up tour of his house. He has a fridge that beeps at him when he doesn't move quickly enough and a fire alarm he can't reach. His relationship with his house is a complicated one. A hoarder of funny and original observations on everyday life, Alun invites us to help him de-clutter his mind and tidy his ideas into one of those bags that you hoover all the air out of and keep under your bed. This show will help Alun and his house work through their relationship issues and prevent a separation that Alun can ill afford; at least not until the market picks up anyway.
