What Happened to Belén: The Unjust Imprisonment That Sparked a Women’s Rights Movement
Foreword by Margaret Atwood The heartbreaking true story of an Argentinian woman imprisoned for having a miscarriage—an injustice that galvanized a feminist movement and became a global rallying cry in the fight for reproductive rights. In 2014, Belén, a twenty-five-year-old woman living in rural Argentina, went to the hospital for a stomachache—and soon found herself in prison. While at the hospital she had a miscarriage—without knowing she was pregnant. Because of the nation’s repressive laws surrounding abortion and reproductive rights, the doctors were forced to report her to the authorities. Despite her protestations, Belén was convicted and sentenced to two years for homicide. Belén’s imprisonment is a glaring example of how women’s health care has become increasingly criminalized, putting the most vulnerable—BIPOC, rural, and low-income—women at greater risk of prosecution. Belén’s cause became the centerpiece of a movement to achieve greater protections for women like her. After two failed attempts to clear her name, Belén met feminist lawyer Soledad Deza, who quickly rallied Amnesty International and ignited an international feminist movement around #niunamas—not one more—symbolized by thousands of demonstrators around the globe donning white masks, the same kind of mask Belén wore when leaving prison. The #niunamas movement was instrumental in pressuring Argentine president Alberto Fernández to decriminalize abortion in 2021. In this gripping and personal account of the case and its impact on local law, Ana Correa, one of Argentina’s leading journalists and activists, makes clear that what happened to Belén could happen to any woman—and that we all have the power to raise our collective voices and demand change. A comprehensive, one-of-a-kind, evidence-based handbook to support postpartum healing and recovery What should you expect when you're done expecting? The Price She Pays: Confronting the Hidden Mental Health Crisis in Women's Sports—from the Schoolyar
Two experts in mental health and sport lift the veil on the crisis in women's athletics, offering parents and coaches urgently needed advice and support and showing how female athletes can find joy in whatever sport they choose, at whatever level they compete. No matter the sport, the message to girls and women on the court or the field is the same: Be aggressive, but not too aggressive. Win at all costs, but be polite while you're doing it. Get strong, but not too big. Female athletes have long been conditioned to perform under these standards, gracefully and without complaints. Yet, behind the scenes, female athletes are suffering from disordered eating, depression and anxiety, emotional and sexual abuse, self-harm, and even suicide ideation. Athletes like tennis star Naomi Osaka and gymnastics world champion Simone Biles recently took breaks from competition on the world stage to tend to their mental health. Their decisions have compelled many of us to ask: What is causing this mental health crisis among female athletes? Through research and stories of female athletes of all ages and ability levels, The Price She Pays illuminates where we are going wrong-and how we can correct course. Informed by their experiences both on and off the field, authors Katie Steele and Dr. Tiffany Brown help athletes and parents identify the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, recognize mistreatment and abuse, understand body image and eating disorders, trauma, and more. By tackling these issues, The Price She Pays encourages readers to understand how the wellbeing of the whole person-not just the athlete-will lead to performance gains from the youth leagues to the elite levels, and everything in between.

Hormones: The new science of hormones and how they shape us
Our hormones shape us at every stage of our lives, from the second we are conceived to the moment we breathe our last breath. They are essential to our immune system, sleep, digestion, hunger, stress levels and so much more. When our hormone systems derail this can wreak havoc on our health and our wellbeing - and yet most of us know very little about the far-reaching power of our chemical messengers. Professor Max Nieuwdorp, an international authority on hormones, sets out to change this. He explores the role our hormones play from our early years through to puberty, pregnancy and old age, combining stories from his day-to-day life treating his patients with the amazing, cutting-edge new science of hormones. These discoveries are changing the way that we understand our bodies, from the decline in male hormones during andropause to the new science on how gut bacteria impact on our hormone balance. This eye-opening, myth-busting book shines a light on the incredible and under-explored role of hormones, which are essential not only to our health but to our moods, our relationships, and so much of what makes us who we are.

Who Is a Worthy Mother?: An Intimate History of Adoption
Nearly every person in the United States is affected by adoption. In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade, the renewed debate over women's reproductive rights places an even greater emphasis on adoption. Wellington's timely-and deeply researched-account amplifies previously marginalized voices and exposes the social and racial biases embedded in the United States' adoption industry. The history of adoption is rarely told from an adoptee's perspective. Wellington remedies this gap by framing the chronicle of adoption in America using her own life story. As she reckons with the pain and unanswered questions of her own experience, she explores broader issues surrounding adoption in the United States, including changing legal policies, sterilization and compulsory relinquishment programs, forced assimilation of babies of color and Indigenous babies adopted into white families, and other liabilities. According to Wellington, US adoption practices in America are shrouded in secrecy, for they frequently cast shame on unmarried women, women struggling with fertility, and 'illegitimate' babies and children. As the United States once again finds itself embroiled in heated disputes over women's bodily autonomy Wellington's book offers a unique and much-needed frame of reference.

Missing Persons, Or My Grandmother's Secrets
Brought to you by Penguin. How far would you go for the missing? When Clair Wills was in her twenties, she discovered she had a cousin she had never met. Born in a Mother and Baby Home in 1950s Ireland, Mary grew up in an institution not far from the farm where Clair spent happy childhood summers. Yet she was never told of her existence. How could a whole family - a whole country - abandon unmarried mothers and their children, erasing them from history? To discover the missing pieces of her family's story, Clair searched across archives and nations, in a journey that would take her from the 1890s to the 1980s, from West Cork to rural Suffolk and Massachusetts, from absent fathers to the grief of a lost child. There are some experiences that do not want to be remembered. What began as an effort to piece together the facts became an act of decoding the most unreliable of evidence - stories, secrets, silences. The result is a moving, exquisitely told story of the secrets families keep, and the violence carried out in their name. 'This is a history shaken by intimacy - a brave and rigorously humane book' Seán Hewitt © Clair Wills 2024 (P) Penguin Audio 2024
