Henry Bonaventure Monnier naît à Paris en 1805. Personnage truculent du 19e siècle, il va exercer son talent et sa verve dasn les domaines artistiques les plus divers. Se révélant très doué pour le dessin, il quitte à 16 ans son emploi de petit gratte-papier chez un notaire pour aller travailler dans des ateliers célèbres, notamment celui du peintre Gros, qu'il doit bientôt quitter en raison de son esprit gouailleur et mystificateur. Très vite il est attiré par le dessin satirique et compose alors une série d'ouvrages ridiculisant les moeurs de l'époque, qu'il illustre de ses caricatures et de ses croquis pris sur le vif. Dans ses écrits, dont les plus célèbres restent les 'Scènes populaires' et l'album 'Les grisettes', il manifeste ses dons d'observateur impitoyable et sa prédliection pour les types populaires. Mais c'est surtout contre le personnage du bourgeois français d'alors qu'il va déployer son comique mordant avec les 'Mémoires de Joseph Prudhomme', publiées en 1857. Il écrit aussi pour le théâtre des vaudevilles et des comédies en coopération avec Labiche, notamment. Il s'essaie même au métier d'acteur et interprète les rôles à sketches de certaines de ses pièces. Il touche ensuite au genre romanesque et compose également dans le style érotique plusieurs oeuvres dont les deux pièces présentées sur cet enregistrement (L'étudiant et la Grisette - Les deux G...) constituent les réussites les plus savoureuses.
