Brecht: Leben des Galilei

Die Erde steht nicht im Mittelpunkt des Universums. Diese aufsehenerregende These kann der geniale Physiker und Naturforscher Galileo Galilei im Italien des 17. Jahrhunderts mit der Erfindung eines neuen Fernrohrs beweisen und zieht damit den Zorn der Kirche auf sich. Diese befürchtet mit der Abwendung vom ptolemäischen Weltbild einen gesellschaftlichen Umsturz. Verfolgt von der Inquisition und aus Angst vor Folter verleugnet Galilei schließlich seine Entdeckung. Als alter Mann kann er sich diesen Verrat an seiner Überzeugung nicht verzeihen und lässt eine Schrift über seine Entdeckung außer Landes schmuggeln. Brechts Stück begleitet den Wissenschaftler über 28 Jahre bei dem Versuch seine Lehre zu verbreiten und trotz Hindernissen weiter zu forschen. Brecht hat sich mit einem seiner wichtigsten Stücke zum Teil von seiner Theorie des epischen Theaters entfernt. Aus formaler Sicht sieht er selbst in dem Stück einen Rückschritt. Inhaltlich hat Brecht jedoch ein Werk geschaffen, das mit dem Konflikt von Wissenschaft und Obrigkeit und der gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung des Wissenschaftlers wohl nie an Aktualität verlieren wird. In der Rolle des Galileo Galilei ist Ekkehard Schall zu hören, der von 1952 bis 1995 Mitglied des Berliner Ensembles war.
