A mediados de la década de los sesenta, tres jóvenes sacerdotes españoles, inconformes con el régimen franquista, sintieron que en España 'no había nada que hacer'. Optaron por unirse a los movimientos revolucionarios en América Latina. Trabajaron en parroquias de Bogotá y Cartagena hasta que fueron deportados por sus actividades subversivas. Entonces regresaron clandestinamente a Colombia para incorporarse al incipiente Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), en cuyas filas había muerto su héroe, el cura revolucionario Camilo Torres Restrepo. Pero de los tres, solo sobrevivió Manuel Pérez, quien, más adelante, llegaría a ser comandante de esa organización guerrillera hasta su muerte en 1998.
La decisión de Camilo Torres de tomar las armas y colocarse al lado de los oprimidos partió en dos la historia de la Iglesia Católica en América Latina. Fue una acción espontánea; Camilo no se puso a calcular el grado de novedad o de radicalismo que suponía su postura. Se podría decir, incluso, que cargar un fusil iba en contra de su carácter; por temperamento —y por formación— Camilo era un hombre pacífico y conciliador. Pero se mostró fiel a su más profunda convicción: de que el cristianismo bien entendido suponía la creación de una sociedad justa e igualitaria.

Tanto así, que la prestigiosa casa Doubleday de Nueva York contrató al exsacerdote y escritor Walter J. Broderick para que le siguiera el rastro y contara su vida. El resultado fue esta biografía, que se lee como una novela.
