"Victorian humour generally doesn't translate well across time. The Wrong Box is one of the exceptions. The plot revolves around the supposed death of Joseph Finsbury, who, as a youth, with his brother Masterman, joined a tontine - a scheme whereby each entrant pays a fixed amount and the sum total, with interest, is given to the one who lives the longest. At the beginning of the story, there are three survivors and then two - the Finsbury brothers. Joseph is guardian to two boys and a girl, Morris, John and Julia. He was responsible for the boys' legacy of £30,000 and invested it unwisely in his failing leather business. The money has all but disappeared, and on reaching adulthood they want their inheritance back! Uncle Joe must be kept alive at all costs. Then there is a train crash.... The novel was either ignored or strongly criticised when first published, not least one suspects because of the irreverent attitude to death and its attendant rituals, subjects which commanded huge respect and veneration almost amounting to obsession from the Victorians. It is, however, a hugely entertaining story with a convoluted, complicated plot that can defy comprehension - but it is of no matter! A cast of gloriously eccentric characters certainly had a comic effect on one notable literary figure of the period. 'I laughed over it dementedly when I read it. That man [Stevenson] has only one lung but he makes you laugh with your whole inside.' (Rudyard Kipling) Public Domain (P)2012 Assembled Stories"

"James of the Glens has been falsely arrested for the murder of Colin Roy Campbell, and David Balfour who was present at the scene, makes a statement to tell his side of the story, meeting Lord Advocate Prestongrange and his charming daughter, Barbara Grant. Prestongrange can be deceitful, however, and David is imprisoned on the Bass rock until the trial is over and James’ fate is sealed. Catriona’s father, the scoundrel James More, is also held in connection with the case - until his daughter frees him with a brave and bold intrigue. After meeting the renegade adventurer Alan Breck again, David and Catriona travel to Holland where David is to study law and there are many humorous misunderstandings in their courtship. Here More reveals himself as the rogue that he is in a wicked betrayal and an attempt to capture Alan."

"Dr Jekyll creates a potion whereby he can divide the good and evil parts of his personality and thus free the good side to work for the benefit of mankind without the distraction of his baser instincts. Unfortunately, he undertakes the experiment while the depraved side of his nature is in the ascendancy and turns into the repulsive Mr Hyde, whose very presence 'emanates with foulness and decay,' and who bears the 'signature of Satan' on his face. Hyde eventually commits murder and begins to dominate the tortured Jekyll, inhabiting the Doctor's body more and more - and then Jekyll's supply of the drugs to make his potion and effect the transformation start to run out! The idea for this horror story came to Stevenson in a nightmare. Part thriller, part mystery the novel's construction was also notable, for the action is described by three of the protagonists. The terrifying tale was hailed as a literary landmark when it was first published in 1886."
