Cuando un pobre molinero falleció, dejó en herencia a sus hijos sus bienes, pero al más pequeño no le dejó más que el gato del granero. El joven no estaba muy contento con su herencia, pero el gato cuando lo vio triste de dijo:
- No te preocupes porque te haya tocado yo en herencia, no tienes más que darme una bolsa y un par de botas y verás que tu herencia no es nada mala.
Así lo hizo el joven molinero y el gato empezó a hacer maravillas y enseguida convirtió a su amo en el marqués de Carabás.
