The Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, also known as the Pastoral Symphony, is a symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, and completed in 1808. One of Beethoven's few works containing explicitly programmatic content, the symphony was first performed in the Theater an der Wien on 22 December 1808 in a four-hour concert.

Florestans Frau Leonore hat sich als Mann verkleidet, um ihren Gatten zu befreien. Sie nennt sich Fidelio und hat sich listenreich von Kerkermeister Rocco als Gehilfe einstellen lassen. Weil Rocco Fidelio vertraut, nimmt er ihn mit hinunter ins Verlies, wo Florestan seinem sicheren Hungertod entgegensieht. Die Zeit drängt. Der Gefangene erkennt seine Frau hinter der Verkleidung. Als beide fliehen wollen, erscheint jedoch der Gouverneur, um Florestan zu erschießen und alle Spuren zu verwischen. Die Katastrophe wird in letzter Sekunde verhindert, als der mächtige Justizminister ebenfalls im Gefängnis eintrifft und Don Pizarro verhaften lässt. Florestan ist frei, Fidelio wird wieder zu Leonore - und alles nimmt ein gutes Ende.
