With the help of a freakishly wise janitor, a newly-hired membership director struggles to keep a fitness center afloat while being given ridiculous tasks from an ethically-questionable owner. Take an opinionated and all-around diverse group of fitness trainers, add a sketchy owner, a genius janitor, and throw in an endearing but largely incompetent general manager, and you have the perfect recipe for riotous, chaotic hilarity. You have Squat! Set in a large fitness center in the Boston suburbs, the sitcom follows Scott Carter, a former big-shot marketing executive who takes a job at Squat Spot Fitness out of desperation. Carter quickly discovers that the place is run by an ethically-questionable owner willing to exploit staff and clients alike, and a general manager who's in way over his head. With the help of a bright fitness director and a freakishly wise janitor, Carter manages to keep the gym open... for at least a bit longer. Squat! features an interesting cast of characters who embody many of the social and political issues of the day. Rather than address these issues directly, they remain lightly veiled within seemingly petty arguments and conflicts. Each episode offers viewers the anticipation and fun of discovering the parallel 'real world' political and social issues highlighted. Without taking sides, Squat! invites viewers to laugh at the absurdity of humanity while deepening understanding of those with differing beliefs. The series presents an additional running theme of owner Jack Pemberton's dubious assignment to Scott Carter. Carter struggles to satisfy his boss without compromising his values. Squat! offers humor--of the smart, subtle, and laugh-out-loud varieties--along with lovable, fallible characters, and even an insight or two about creativity, understanding, and ethics. The first season comprises ten fully-scripted episodes, rewritten as a comedic novel. Season One innocuously and hilariously provides a nod to such topics as COVID / mask-wearing, claims of election fraud, QAnon conspiracy theories, pronouns, 'Karens,' defunding the police, multi-level marketing scams, cults, and even truth itself. If Seinfeld had a threesome with Dodgeball and The Office, and miraculously conceived a lovechild, Squat! would be it.

A Mostly Magnificent Memoir: True Stories Dramatized and Somewhat Fictionalized
A child of the 1980s relives a dysfunctional and hilarious childhood in the most difficult speech of his life. It's FORREST GUMP meets THE WONDER YEARS - but mostly true. Hysterically funny at times, heart-wrenching and heart-warming at other times, highly entertaining all the time. The story follows James Murphy, who lives an extraordinarily unique life learning ordinary life lessons to which everyone can relate through his many misadventures. James' misadventures feature everything from swindling friends out of valuable baseball cards to run-ins with bullies and kids in Connecticut 'gangs', from awkward romantic heartbreak to family party fiascos, from sophisticated pranks that build up to a court appearance and community service to a death defying 'rafting' incident. This is a fictionalized and dramatized adaptation of the author's autobiography turned into a full-motion picture screenplay turned into a novella. It's the unbelievable stories that are actually true. James isn't lying about the magic beanstalk growing on his back porch. Or the monkey in their tree--in New England. He did chase a UFO with his mother and stopped her from killing his dad. Let's just say this book is a collection of true stories made more entertaining and wrapped in a white lie. A Mostly Magnificent Memoir reminds us all that we are social creatures--how our seemingly insignificant interactions with others can significantly impact their lives. It reminds us how precious life is and how grateful we should be for the people in our lives. It reminds us that it is okay to laugh at our own misadventures because life is too short not to.

Rules of Reason: Making and Evaluating Claims
Claims are constantly being made, many of which are confusing, ambiguous, too general to be of value, exaggerated, unfalsifiable, and suggest a dichotomy when no such dichotomy exists. Good critical thinking requires a thorough understanding of the claim before attempting to determine its veracity. Good communication requires the ability to make clear, precise, explicit claims, or 'strong' claims. The rules of reason in this book provide the framework for obtaining this understanding and ability. This book is about the the eleven rules of reason for making and evaluating claims. Each covered in detail in the book. These are: 1) Acknowledge the Limits of Your Knowledge Regarding the Claim. 2) Explore Your Biases Related to the Claim. 3) Isolate the Actual Claim. 4) Clearly and Precisely Define Each Relevant Term. 5) Use Terms That Reflect the Scope of the Claim Accurately. 6) Operationalize Terms When Possible. 7) Make the Claim Falsifiable When Possible. 8) Express an Accurate and Meaningful Level of Confidence. 9) Convert Causes to Contributing Factors When Appropriate. 10) Make Strong Analogies and Call Out Weak Ones. 11) Filter All Relevant Assumptions Through These Same Rules. By the time you have finished this should book, no matter how good you were before at evaluating claims, you will be even better at it.

Eat Meat... or Don't: Considering the Moral Arguments For and Against Eating Meat
Roughly 95% of Americans don't appear to have an ethical problem with animals being killed for food, yet all of us would have a serious problem with humans being killed for food. What does an animal lack that a human has that justifies killing the animal for food but not the human? As you start to list properties that the animal lacks to justify eating them, you begin to realize that some humans also lack those properties, yet we don't eat those humans. Is this logical proof that killing and eating animals for food is immoral? Don't put away your steak knife just yet. In Eat Meat... Or Don't, we examine the moral arguments for and against eating meat with both philosophical and scientific rigor. This book is not about pushing some ideological agenda; it's ultimately a book about critical thinking. But moral facts shouldn't be confused with ideology. When it comes to moral choices, there are better ones, and there are worse ones. If you act rationally and ethically and have adopted a good moral framework, you might come to the justified conclusion that eating meat is unethical... or you might not. Regardless of your conclusion, you will almost certainly realize that eating less meat is a fantastic idea for your health, the environment, and especially animals, and it's an easily achievable goal that will change your life for the better.

Many of our ideas about the world are based more on feelings than facts, sensibilities than science, and rage than reality. We gravitate toward ideas that make us feel comfortable in areas such as religion, politics, philosophy, social justice, love and sex, humanity, and morality. We avoid ideas that make us feel uncomfortable. This avoidance is a largely unconscious process that affects our judgment and gets in the way of our ability to reach rational and reasonable conclusions. By understanding how our mind works in this area, we can start embracing uncomfortable ideas and be better informed, be more understanding of others, and make better decisions in all areas of life. Some uncomfortable ideas entertained in this book: - Political correctness can be harmful - Identity politics is a dangerous game - Morality is functionally democratic - Victims often do share some of the responsibility - God is a far more horrifying character than Satan - There is no such thing as freewill - Americans are manipulated into being pro-war - Non-whites can be racist, and women can be sexist - Some people do 'choose to be gay' - Sometimes the bad guys win - Obese people are not perfect the way they are - It's okay to find inappropriate jokes funny Facts don't care about feelings. Science isn't concerned about sensibilities. And reality couldn't care less about rage. Uncomfortable ideas. Prepare for a bumpy ride.

This book is based on the first five years of The Dr. Bo Show, where Bo takes a critical thinking-, reason-, and science-based approach to issues that matter with the goal of educating and entertaining. Every chapter in the book explores a different aspect of reason by using a real-world issue or example. Part one is about how science works even when the public thinks it doesn't. Part two will certainly ruffle some feathers by offering a reason- and science-based perspective on issues where political correctness has gone awry. Part three provides some data-driven advice for your health and well-being. Part four looks at human behavior and how we can better navigate our social worlds. In part five we put on our skeptical goggles and critically examine a few commonly-held beliefs. In the final section, we look at a few ways how we all can make the world a better place.
