The Reverend Father Gaucher's Elixir
Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897) was one of France's finest storytellers. The Reverend Father Gaucher's Elixir is set in a dilapidated monastery in Provence. The order has fallen on hard times and the future of the entire monastery is in jeopardy. But the order's simpleton cow-herd, Brother Gaucher, has an unexpected idea. His old Auntie Bégon had in her later years invented a marvellous herbal elixir. By producing, bottling, and selling this, Brother Gaucher believes the order can become as rich as the Trappists and the monks of Chartreuse. The Prior is enthusiastic and Brother Gaucher sets to work, and before long the whole monastery is thriving. Brother Gaucher - now elevated to Father Gaucher - works alone and in secret in his distillery producing the wonderful and sought-after brew. But it is not long before Father Gaucher starts behaving very oddly...and his madness threatens to destabilize the whole monastery....

The year is 1870. The elderly Colonel Jouve has suffered a medical collapse and is confined to his bed. It is uncertain whether or not he will pull through. His granddaughter takes over his care. Then one day, news reaches Paris of military successes in the war against Prussia. Colonel Jouve senses the optimism in the air and his health begins to improve. Almost immediately further news reaches Paris. The previous news was wrong - in fact the French are being beaten back. Colonel Jouve's son has been taken prisoner. The Prussians are marching on Paris. Fearful that this news will prove the death-blow to Colonel Jouve, his granddaughter, with the complicity of the doctor, decides to create the illusion that the French are winning the war. But the Colonel demands constant details. Where are battles being fought? What route are the French regiments taking on their advance towards Berlin? News bulletins and letters must be faked in order to deceive the old invalid. White bread and meat must be procured for him...for he must not guess that it is Paris itself that is besieged and not Berlin. But then finally the day arrives when the Prussians enter Paris and parade down the Champs Elyssées....

The term ’shameless hussy’ could have been invented to describe the main protagonist of Daudets first international bestseller. There are more vulgar epithets one could apply to ‘Little Chebe’ as she schemes her way up the ladder to reach social equality with her neighbour Claire Fromont, the daughter of the owner of the factory which she studies enviously during her nightly vigils.Fortune favours the wicked as she collects, manipulates and breaks the hearts of all men within her compass to achieve her goal.Daudet suggests that the working conditions and general lack of morality within the environs of Paris contribute to this catastrophe and at the tragic end he makes the point bluntly but nevertheless there are few women in literature with less moral scruple than Shiffonye and the last cruel act of revenge is inspired by the devil. The author had a very unhappy childhood, his father was a bankrupt and in his early career he was mentored by Emile Zola and the Goncourt brothers. His work has the same graphic realism that illumines their novels and he adds the experience of his own traumatic early years to the story. It is a scorching tale and all the characters are either badly burnt or slightly singed by the flames of passion ignited by the Jezebel amongst them.

Now CSA Word brings them together again but as readers of a series of short stories, anecdotes, musings, light essays and fables written in the late 19th century by two authors who were never very prolific, but whose works have stood the test of time.
