In a dystopian Berlin, Owen Resler needs to fit in as a data fracker so he can leave memories of poverty in his past and maybe even make a change from the inside. Notorious mercenary Mia Warsaw has other ways of making an impact and takes on a job to eliminate an unscrupulous and sadistic business mogul. When Owen Resler once again finds himself in a desperate situation, Mia’s job offer means he has to choose between struggling once more to find his way on his own, or face a great deal of risk to try and bring about massive change. ‘Pacific State’ by Grant Price is book two of The Sundown Series and, although I haven’t read the first book, Reality Testing, I didn’t feel like I was missing out and think that you could read this series in any order as they have different main characters. However, to fully understand how this futuristic Berlin came to be then readers may benefit from starting this series at the beginning. Owen is a complex character in an uncertain position, unsure of what to do in life in order to make the biggest difference. This uncertainty allows you to take in more of this dystopian world as Owen assesses each of his options and reflects on his past. The author does a great job of balancing all of the characters on a knife edge, with limited resources available and trusts betrayed for a higher price there’s plenty of tension as the action intensifies. The plot eases you in gradually, following Owen and Mia as their paths begin to cross. This again is a clever way to incorporate world-building and is another reason why I didn’t quite feel as though I was missing out by joining the story in book two. There are also questions raised about the power of capitalism woven subtly into the narrative and a hint of change leaves the door open for future books. I think that ‘Pacific State’ is a quick and entertaining read. I think that fans of dystopian science fiction would enjoy this series and that and fans of the author and ‘Reality Testing’ will enjoy this second instalment.
